Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday, the day to get wild and let it all hang out, both figuratively and literally, before the austere season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. Party your ass off today because tomorrow begins forty days of begging for forgiveness. In my humble, layman's opinion, if you have to atone, do penance and plead for mercy for forty days, you better sure as hell get your freak on, big time!
Carnival, or Mardi Gras, is the time to celebrate the last day of the party season following Christmas and New Year's before beginning the penitential period leading up to Easter. Then, we party again to celebrate the arrival and the period of the Easter or Paschal Feast. It all makes sense to me, if we really get into the spirit and festivities, then forty days doesn't seem too unbearable before we start the whole cycle all over again.
